Product details

The T-72 is a main battle tank developed by the Soviet Union in 1967 and first unveiled in November 1977 at the Soviet Union's Red Square military parade commemorating the 60th anniversary of the October Revolution. The T-72 was a product of the Soviet Union's pursuit of large-scale deep operations in Europe, with a large number of moderately capable and low-cost main battle tank clusters for assault, replacing the T-55 as the main body of Soviet armor in the late Cold War. In addition to serving in large numbers with the Red Army, the T-72 was also exported and licensed to Warsaw Pact Allies Poland and Czechoslovakia, as well as India in South Asia, with a total production of 20,000 units, and was the basis for several countries' homemade tanks, including the Yugoslav M-84, the Iraqi Lion of Babylon, and the Romanian TR-125, which were copied from the T-72. The Chinese 85-IIM design was also influenced by the T-72. Although the first T-72 was produced in 1973, due to its reliable performance and low price, improved versions are still produced in Russia for domestic use and export.
